Minimum Eligibility:

  1. You should have B.E. /B.Tech. /B.Sc. in Engg. Degree required
  2. If you are a final-year students, the final result of 8th semester and mark-sheets must be presented at the time of interview.
  3. minimum required number varies for different PSUs companies generally,60%-70% for general and 50%-60% for the SC/ST/OBC/PH.
  4. PSUs allow for two years gap.
  5. Only candidates between 21 to 30 years are selected.
  6. Three years of relaxation is offered to OBC.
  7. No more than 5 years relaxation is granted to SC/ST.
  8. It is important to appear for GATE exam before applying.

There is Two hiring process of PSU’s :

1. GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering)

All these public sector compnies recruite Engineer Trainee (ET) based on the GATE scores. Initially they would shortlist candidates based on GATE scores and then the process is followed by written test or  GD/ Interview or both for assessment of different facets of knowledge.

2. UGC / NET

The National Education Testing Bureau of University Grants Commission (UGC) conducts National Eligibility Test (NET) to establish eligibility for lectureship and award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) to maintain minimum standard for the candidate

BSNL- JTO (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.- Junior Telecom. Officers)

Some companies ask candidates to show their GATE score when applying. They have replaced GATE score with written test. Therefore I will urge you to appear for the General Aptitude Test for Engineering before applying for the job in any PSU company.

Each company has a separate notification for jobs. You will have to go through notification of each company and see whether there are vacancies for Engineering graduates of your stream. Only then you should apply for the job.

Examination Pattern

  • Number of Questions: 150-200 Question
  • Time duration: 2 – 2½ Hrs
  • Negative Marking: 1/3
  • Technical:75% of total questions
  • General aptitude with English: 25%

Selection Procedure

The usual selection procedure followed by maximum no. of PSUs CIVIL includes the following stages:

Stage-I: – Written Examination (Generally on Sunday)

Stage-II: – Interview and GD

Stage-III: – Medical Examination


Stage-I: Written Examination Duration: – avg  2 hrs Written exam of various PSUs CIVIL can be divided mainly into 4 sections:-

  1. Technical-Civil Engineering subjects and Engineering Maths
  2. Aptitude & Reasoning
  3. English & RC
  4. General Awareness & current affairs

Stage-II: – Interview The interview is mainly conducted to lure the hidden potential of the candidate, thus it focuses on:

  1. Maximum stress on testing the technical knowledge of the candidate.
  2. More of HR Question limited to the general introduction, work experience (if any), hobbies etc.
  3. Final year project is very important for the interview.

Group Discussion is also conducted at some PSUs CIVIL with the interview, which involves:

  1. Duration is 20 -30 minutes.
  2. Usually easy topics are given for discussion.
  3. Contemporary social and political issues are highly probable topics to be given.
  4. Topics on environmental and technical issues can also be given. *Note: – Interview and GD in most of the PSU’s CIVIL can also be taken in Hindi


Stage-III: – Medical Examination In some of the PSUs CIVIL, candidates selected on the basis of their performance in written exam, interview and GD are finally called for a medical check-up prior to their appointment and training. Things need to be remembered Apart from the above pattern of PSUs’ CIVIL examinations, followings things are also considered:

  • There can be an additional stage in some of the PSUs where only short-listed candidates are allowed to appear for the written exam. All the applicants fulfilling the eligibility criteria are screened again on the basis of their % of B.Tech primarily and depending upon the no. of vacancies only selected candidates are called for the written exam. eg- MECON Limited, BHEL etc.
  • Some PSUs CIVIL don’t hold interviews as a part of their selection procedure eg- MECON Limited, GAS AUTHORITY INCORPORATION LIMITED (GAIL)Though, the general pattern of examination has never been declared by any PSU’S CIVIL, the trend of weight age given to different stages of selection which is followed by most of the PSUs CIVIL is: Written – 70-85%, Interview – 15-30%, GD – 5%.
